An Intro to peerFIT at Seasons 52 mmmmmm
Last week, I went to a luncheon hosted by peerFit and the beautiful Fitz Koehler (of Fitzness and a fellow Fitfluential Ambassador!). Fitz also runs something called the Morning Mile, a program she devised for schools to get kids running in the morning before school, it’s an amazing program.
The lunch was at Seasons 52 in Tampa which was awesome because I hadn’t been there yet and I’ve been dying to go and now that I have I want to go back. (Also I hear Tara Costa went there when she came to Tampa and you all know how she’s my best friend.)
Before that luncheon, I hadn’t heard of peerFit, but it’s a very helpful (and free!) website and app that allows users to review gyms and fitness classes and share their favorites via social media. Before I launch into the website and app, I must talk about the luncheon portion. Just because.
First we put on our name tags with our favorite group fitness class and mine is “spin.” I heart spin class so much.
And I sat next to Caroline from My Fascinating Life. She likes the Body Pump. (Me too.)
We sat at a table with some amazingly fit personal trainers and some more familiar faces, Running Rachel and Mary from Food and Fun on the Run (more Fitfluential Ambassadors!)
Fitz called on me while I was tweeting a picture of her using the #peerfittampa hashtag and the whole room turned and looked at me and thankfully I was half listening and rebounded nicely about doing triathlons and having fitness goals. (Whew!)
We learned a little bit about the PeerFit website with Ed Buckley, the peerFit president. (He likes the Bosu Ab class).
And then the food came.
Salad of course. And some flatbread pizzas.
I was blinded by its beauty and got Jedi mind tricked into eating some mushrooms but I won’t hold it against anyone because the pizzas were ridiculous yum.
And then this lovely asparagus sandwich?
To die for. (I kindly extracted the mushrooms this time.)
And then this walked by.
Seriously.
Someone help me this is about fitness. I chose just one (difficulty being a 10 on a scale of 1-10) and had the red velvet.
I am doing a “don’t ask don’t tell” on whether there was red#40 in it so don’t tell me! Because it was delicious. Sometimes it’s just best to be ignorant. I reserve my right.
About peerFit
So, about PeerFit because that’s what we’re all really here for, right?
PeerFit is an easily navigable website and there’s even a mobile app to go with it that allows you to find a fitness class in your area, find out how the class is and even find out the difficulty level of the instructor leading the class all by peer reviewers. And because I’m usually wary before trying a new class (aren’t we all?) this website is really cool.
It’s pretty new so I had to add my gym to the list of gyms in my area, which was really easy. I logged in through Facebook and clicked on Create a Facility.
Even though my gym wasn’t on there yet, there are a lot of them on there, not just here in Florida but around the country.
So I can really see its potential.
First, the more people use it to talk about the classes and the instructors and the gyms they’ve used and tried, the more word will spread about the cool classes that are out there not only at the large box gyms but the smaller gyms and studios.
I can also see its potential while traveling! If you need a gym, need a class nearby, want to locate a yoga studio or something nearby an area you’re unfamiliar with, you can not only find one, but find one with commentary! And then after you take it, you can add your own commentary!
Imagine the potential of communicating all our fitness classes, I mean haven’t you passed by that pole dancing fitness studio wondering how the classes are?! Or even wondering about the hotel pool and if that’s not good enough, finding the nearest pool? At some point or another you’re going to be training for something and be traveling, and I personally want to have that knowledge of where to go at my fingertips. I always call the hotel ahead of time or try and find a branch of my own gym nearby already, but this gives you even more with less work!
What I really love is that you can choose a descriptor for the instructor: Drill Sergeant, Easy Going, Tough, Energetic, and there is a rating scale for the class difficulty so you’ll know ahead of time if you will be shown any mercy.
If you’re a fitness instructor, YOU CAN ADD YOUR CLASS! And get your class involved in rating and commenting on your classes for feedback and to share the word about your amazing classes via Facebook and Twitter! Your students can help you fill your classes!
And bloggers, you can also embed your favorite classes right into your blog! You can also have it text you a reminder about a class.
So there are some pretty cool features.
If you’re in the Tampa Bay area, peerFit is hosting a ginormous outdoor workout on November 11th in Hyde Park, which will include circuit training, yoga and more. Best of all it’s free and EVERYONE IS INVITED! It’ll be hosted by Fitz!
Isn’t she purty?
Check out the peerFit website and download the peerFit app from i-Tunes or for Android and let me know what you think!
You can also find peerFit on Facebook and follow peerFit on Twitter.
What is your favorite group class?
