Honey as an Antibiotic? Yup!
It wasn’t until I got a comment on my Honey Peanut Butter Play Dough recipe post about honey being an antibiotic that I had to go look it up for myself. And well, what do you know? YUP! It sure is!
We’re wrapping up September which is National Honey Month and I highlighted some seriously yummy honey recipes every Saturday of this month. Honey has been added to our repertoire as a sweetener as soon as we gave up things like processed syrups months ago. (When paired with peanut butter, it’s a waffle’s best friend dontcha know.) Since then, we’ve found a million and one other uses in recipes for it.
And since we’re on the tawpic I figured I’d share some other benefits and uses of honey, because there are surprisingly many.
First of all, as I mentioned, honey can be used as an antibiotic. A recent study published in the Journal of Microbiology says that honey inhibits the growth of some bacteria. Which means you can actually apply honey onto your wounds. We’re not talking gaping here, but superficial cuts and scrapes and even burns? Yes.
You can use honey as a facial moisturizer and use it in facial masks. Which I’m going to.

Honey helps acne! Which is good news today for my chin.
You can use honey as cough syrup. My mom used to take a spoonful of honey and mix it with a little lemon juice and that was my cough drop. I loved it! Honey helps to sooth sore throats with its antimicrobial properties, but honey and lemon is just delicious anyways, I loved it back then and I love it now.
Honey is anti-cancer. Woohoo! (Well aren’t we all? I picture honey picketing cancer, don’t you? Like I would if I knew it would make a difference.) But since I can’t picket the cansuh, I can continue to use honey, which has antioxidants that can kill the cansuh or make it less of a breeding ground, anyways.
Honey is also an energy booster! It has natural sugars that help you beat fatigue, so you can take it before a workout or add it to your pre-workout yummies! Which I do.
Happy Honey Month!
Have you heard of or used honey in any other interesting ways?

I’ve used it as an application for a burn or wound (can’t remember exactly). I just remember getting some advice from my local co-op natural store about it, then applying the honey. It worked! No scarring.
