Homemade (Last Minute) Teacher Gift With a Twist

by

Last year we made this pencil vase for my kids’ teachers. It was so easy and made from mostly dollar store materials.

This year I made it for my 6 year old’s kindergarten teacher, with a twist. I changed the color of the pencils and I added a gift.

It’s so simple and inexpensive and best of all, it took me about 15 minutes.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 generic Crystal Light drink container. The Crystal Light one isn’t round anymore, it’s oval, but the Target brand or generic store brand is round so you can use that one.
  • Pencils from the dollar store, yellow ones or any kind, two boxes of 12
  • 3 fat rubber bands or skinny ones that you can group together
  • Flowers
  • Floral wire (dollar store)
  • Hershey Kisses
  • Clear plastic sticky glue mounting squares or glue gun

Here’s how you do it.

First of all, you take the empty round plastic cylinder that will be the “vase.” You’ll have nowhere to put the drink mixes. Sorry about that. :)

Instead of yellow #2s in the first gift, I used pink pencils, 2 boxes of 12 from the dollar store. You probably won’t use them all, you’ll have extra left over.

I used about 10 rubber bands, 5 of them together up top and 5 a little further down but you can use two or three big fat rubber bands instead (I liked these because they were colorful.)

Once you fasten the rubber bands into place, start putting the pencils in by groups of 6 or so. Then flatten them out to make them flush against the container and put in more until the pencils go all the way around.

Clear Mounting Squares

I added some sticky squares around the outside and hooked her up with some Hershey’s Kisses mostly because of my son’s request to give her some chocolate. He was pretty adamant about that.

Then I cut a piece of floral wire into one long piece, but folded the top so it would hold a spa gift card. Because I am not a teacher but I can imagine watching 23 little kids every day (no I really can’t) and she might need a spa day or at least I know I would.

So what do you think, do you like it?

I hope she does!

  2. I made these this year for Christmas for the teachers – but used a glue gun to glue the pencils onto dollar-store glass vases – so they could use them for real flowers. Took soooooo long to glue the pencils on – this is much easier :)
