Sooooo….. I went to the casting for the commercial yesterday! And I have absolutely no idea how I did.
But I can tell you that:
1. I am learning a LOT about this stuff that I had no idea about. It’s like research!
2. This whole doing something that scares me to death IS FUN! You really must try it!
3. It took everything in me not to pull off at Disney World on the way home, park real quick, ride Space Mountain (or the Carousel of Progress), hop back in the car and drive home. And..
4. I am definitely singing Nirvana’s “Nevermind” the next time I do Karaoke because let me tell you, I ROCKED THAT in the car on the way home.

- What I’m thinking: “This is it. Don’t get scared now.”
Anyway, in case you are wondering what the casting call itself was like, after two days of incessant panic and shopping for something other than yoga pants, I found something casual that I really liked and wore that.
With jeans. It was literally the last thing I tried on after going to 7 other stores. SEVEN.
And since my dryer is broken (yes my dryer is broken, I’m in agony), my dad took my jeans the night before (that were on day 3) and washed them for me and dried them and then brought them back to me in the morning. Isn’t he awesome?
Also my awesome friend Bonnie who does all this for real came over and gave me some great advice, along with a great vivid pink collared shirt that she wears in her casting calls to use too (THANK YOU!) and I brought that with me as my backup (it was beautiful!) and the color impressed the lady doing the interview (THANK YOU AGAIN!)
I was definitely not out of place with what I wore, the outfits ran the gamut from superdressy to super-casual, so I was right in between and felt comfortable.
The casting call was in a small building in one of the backlots of Universal Studios.
I walked in and the room was packed with lots of moms. I have to say, I was expecting people to be all competitive and such, eyeing people up and down and giving the stink-eye, but noway man, instead it was the most chit-chatty friendly room of moms EVER! Everyone wished each other luck, chit-chatted, it was so friendly! Yay for happy friendly non-competitive moms.
The casting people asked me to bring a receipt so I brought one from a shopping trip that was almost as tall as me. (I wasn’t sure if size would matter… still not sure if it did. But its size did impress the interviewer lady.) The commercial is for a retail store and they were looking for moms who like deals (ME!)
I had gotten there a 1/2 hour early because I was afraid of getting lost and wanted to leave myself time to get lost and have time to pee freshen up. They were running 2 hours behind schedule which was ok by me because I had my iPad, an internet connection and..
PINTEREST!
(Seriously, I’m by myself, someone’s watching the kids, I’m in a room with internet and Pinterest, does it get much more paradise-ier than that? )
You will probably see a lot of pins from me between the hours of 3:45 and 5:30. It was sort of luxurious. Except for the heat of the room (I did have the sweat mustache forming, early stages though, tiny beads.)
After a lot of pinning and some tweeting and Facebooking, I, number 49, went into another smaller, much cooler room to wait for my turn and allow the sweat mustache to disappear.
And then…
It was my turn. I went into another room where there was a lady and a video camera and I stood on the black “x” and looked at the camera, stated my name while holding up my number, and then answered questions for my interview about my shopping habits, spending habits, where I shop, etc.
I tried to remember to smile.
I kept rocking back and forth on my feet like Rain Man and had to catch myself from doing that and being too handsy like Tony Robbins.
I left just like I did last time, not knowing at all what they were looking for with my answers or if they’d pick me but full well knowing I did my best to be me and to be honest.
It was 6 o’clock when I left and I was behind Universal Studios Island of Adventure, my 2nd favorite theme park, and one of my favorite roller coasters.
I was itchin’ to ride it.
And then I sang all the way home. Which included an eclectic mix of songs from Adele to Nirvana.
The commercial shoots in March. Even though I have no actual idea how it went, I’m not really expecting to hear back because my goal of scaring myself has already been met.
Doing this helped me realize that there’s a benefit to reap to anything you do when you just put it out there. And I want to do that more.
In fact, this has been totally liberating.
And it’s nice to be free.
