I don’t know about you, but I have never seen The Lion King.
*cue gasp*
I know.
I thought I had. I really did. I didn’t know when I had but I was sure I had! (I mean, who hasn’t???!!)
Until I went to the screening with my little boy and my parents and I realized there is no way I would forget something this amazing.
The Lion King is back, for only 2 weeks in theaters on September 16th and it is a must-see in 3D.
The Plot
The Lion King is a story about a little lion named Simba who will eventually grow to take over the throne of the African Pride Lands, held by his father, King Mufasa. However, the evil “Uncle Scar,” who was next in line for the throne until Simba was born, has other plans. The adventure takes you on a soul-searching journey through laughter and tears as Simba is forced into exile and finds himself among some new non-lion friends, running from his past and essentially, too, running from his future.

The cast includes the voices of James Earl Jones as King Mufasa, Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the young Simba, Jeremy Irons as “Scar” along with the voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, Jim Cummings and Nathan Lane among others.
The Love Story
The Lion King is called a love story between a father and son and it’s true; their loving nurturing relationship makes me want to be a better mother and the movie is full of amazing messages of bravery and courage to face your fears and right the wrongs in your life.
The messages of the beautiful circle of life.
I had forgotten, too, how beautiful the Oscar-winning soundtrack is, and since the movie came out well before I had children, in fact it came out in 1994 (my freshman year of college), I got to see it this time through my “mom” eyes and through the eyes of my three year old.
Even if I had seen the movie back then, it would certainly mean something different to me now.
The Lion King in Disney Digital 3D
Unlike the computer-animated movies, The Lion King was handdrawn and it’s one of the first to have been revamped with 3D technology. The team made up of more than 60 3D artists worked with the original filmmakers to ensure it reflected their original vision for the movie.
The scenery in 3D and the colorful imagery is just simply gorgeous in and of itself. And coupled with the classic soundtrack, the 3D experience was simply amazing.
If you never caught The Lion King the first time around because you’re cuckoo like me and for some reason never even saw it on DVD either (honestly, how I managed that, I really just don’t know…) you must go to see it when it hits theaters September 16th. It will only be there for two weeks!
After that, The Lion King 3D will be released in high-definition Blu-ray™ and Blu-ray 3D™ on October 4, and in a one-disc DVD on November 15.
Until then, I have some great links for you to share with the children if they’re as excited about it as mine are!

Um, I saw this when it first came out in theaters. It came out a year before I was married and 3 years before I had kids. I bawled like a baby. I don’t know if I have it in me to see it now, given I now have high schoolers and they will be off to college and on their own before I know it. I don’t know if my heart can take it.
I can see why you bawled, i did too! I really can’t believe I hadn’t seen it but what an amazing movie.
I was 10 when Lion King came out and I LOVED it. I still sometimes hum the opening scene’s music. Thanks for letting me know it’s coming out Oct. 4th on DVD, because my kids haven’t seen it yet and they really, really should.
